Relative Memories ….. Day27

When I was making rice for lunch today, there was an unusual smell 😉 Ha ha! not something bad, I have to call it an aroma actually. And it took me back to some good old days – this is a smell which I relate with my Nani [my maternal grandmom]. Years ago, in the days without pressure cookers, she used to make rice by cooking it on sim fire in a normal vessel and this aroma used to fill the entire house – so much so that, I began to associate that smell with Ajji mane [grandmom’s home]. My nose is sooo sensitive to that smell that anywhere I can feel it, it reminds me of Ajji mane.  Its amazing what smell, taste, music etc.. can do to our mood @ certain times – make us all nostalgic!

Like a dish called majjige-hulhi [‘curd sambar’ being the literal translation :P] which is usually made using ash-gourd, cucumber, lady’s finger etc.. My Dadi [paternal grandmom] used to make it with brinjal!  Not so common – it used to taste delicious!!! So, whenever I make it now, its always Ajji who occupies my thoughts 🙂  Like some dishes taste just like what our Moms make and bring us so much joy 🙂

Music has the same effect too.  I was listening to the song ‘Nani teri morni ko‘ when my Badi Nani [Grandpa’s Bhabhi] passed away and the song brings to my memory all those wonderful moments that we spent with her.  My Nani was famous for singing ‘Yeh Zindagi Usi ki hai‘ be it @ family functions or just like that when we all got together or when we played Antakshari 🙂  It does bring a smile on my face when I listen to this song.

Isn’t it a beautiful feeling that our dear ones stay with us in so many ways, through so many channels even after they have passed on to another world?  Any such memories that you people can relate to? Please share them here … I would love to read them 🙂

  2. This is a nice one, Swaram! Majjige huli is my favourite, too! Esp. Shyavige with majjige huli…mmmm!

My grandmother’s thambuli with any vegetable, used to be very tasty. Very rarely we get that taste. If the taste is good, immediately we recall her taste.

She used to like some songs so much that she used to start crying…whenever I hear old Rafi’s songs, Hemant Kumar’s songs, I remember her even now. My sister in law, who is a Tamilian, used to love ‘indu yenage Govinda’ and ‘Poojisalende hoogala thande’. We used to have a cassette player in those days and I had to keep on repeating these songs. These songs remind me of her even now!

Yea I have this tendency of suddenly falling back upon memories in the middle of a conversation and would lose track of everything else. It maybe just a random thought that passes through my head…I may remember something else… and then bam! I’m gone! LOL

  9. Aeroplane smell! That’s what I used to call that whiff that greets you at the door into the plane where the air hostess welcomes you…that yummy perfume always makes me think of family reunions, travel across continents and (then) airplane meals!

And certain detergent smells remind me of my hostel days when we used to all wash our clothes and hang them up to dry! Lovely post!

  10. Actually, every day cooking is so nostalgic for me, as I do some dish, which my patti or amma has prepared, when I was young…those vessels used for cooking, their peculiar sounds, the grinding stone to make the masala, the masala smell in your hands, even the smell of hing in the air and of course, the special smell associated with patti and amma’s cooking…every thing fills in me and I try to achieve it in my cooking. Its tough but still worth a try !!! 🙂

  13. Oh yes! Smells always bring back memories! Any sandal soap/powder smell and I am back in my grannie’s home years ago! Certain smells of incense sticks and I am reminded of pujas at her place. And now also, a couple of deos remind me of trips to places (London to be exact). It is amusing how the nose associates everything to memories!

  14. Oh yes. The ancestral house which we used to visit once every 2 years. All the relatives would collect to meet us ‘out-station’ people at the grandparents’ place. My nanaji had a big swing inside his house. We used to sit there and sing songs loudly. (I used to blabber on the hindi lyrics as I never knew the tamil ones! ) 😀
