What would anybody do if they faced a drought and a famine – no food to eat, death of dear ones all around, no water, no electricity and much more? Sit and curse their fate and give up all hope? That is not what Kamkwamba did! He decided to take it upon himself to pull his people out of it!

William Kamkwamba, all of 14, had to drop out of school because his family could not afford his fees and had to work hard in the fields. He spent the little time he had left studying books in his school library to quench his passion for everything science! Thanks to this, he had a ‘crazy idea’- he wanted to build a windmill to bring water into his fields and home, and also light to people who could never be awake after 7pm owing to the pitch darkness all around.

A story of determination, hard-work, belief in oneself and at the same time, transports you back to your childhood days – the silly games played, the fun with cousins, planning and trying out weird things with friends, the striking resemblances with some things Indian, this book can pep you up like anything!

A lesson which all of us can take home, like William Kankwamba says ‘If you want to make it, all you have to do is try’. Read to know more πŸ™‚

Here is his story in his own words, on TED!
