Munnar beckons!

Hey ppl! As all of u know, we celebrated Independence day @ Munnar this time 🙂

So, before u ppl throw rotten tomatoes n eggs @ me or sshhh me away, lemme help myself n post the pictures 🙄 Hope u all njoy the virtual journey 😉

We started on 14th august from Hyderabad and I had fun from the word GO! With some gr8 music playing on Kingfisher Radio in the background, I started having a talk with Megha while the man was busy talking with Bangladeshi n Zimbabwean cricketers [Yes! Even on board the plane :P]. I ws so busy clicking pics of the diff forms of clouds that I just dint realize that we hd already reached Cochin 8)

I loved this pic on the tail of one of the planes @ Cochin airport!

We left for Munnar immediately and the entire route from Cochin to Munnar was a treat to the eyes! The journey to heaven hd begun 🙂  I was mighty impressed with the roads – well-laid, very clean – what a joy ride it ws!  Greenery all around, awesome weather, the rains playing magic and the no. of waterfalls more than the sum total of all those I have seen in all my life till now made the sojourn Oh so romantic 🙂 Some buildings on the way were really attractive too – with a traditional touch to them!

We stopped the car @ many places on the way enjoying in the lap of Mother Nature, playing near the waterfalls and had a gala time. I don’t think there’s any sight-seeing required at all because each step u take offers u something so beautiful that you happen to think this is the best of the lot only to be left dumbstruck a few steps ahead ❗ Wonder if u can really understand Serenity and Tranquility so well anywhere else in the world!

A beautiful building on the way!

Carrots, tree tomatoes etc.. sold on the way!

After having a gr8 time all along, we reached Munnar in the evening right in time to attend a Kathakali program. Starting from the make-up routine of the performers, the different expressions and mudras [actions with the hand], everything was well explained for the layman to understand before the start of the actual performance. It was worth watching and we thoroughly enjoyed it 🙂

By the time we reached the estate bungalow where we were supposed to stay, it was already dark. We could make out that the view was spectacular, thanks to the tea estates all around and NO concrete structure visible at all other than the place we stayed!  The care-takers [an in-house chef and another person] extended such a warm welcome that we felt so much @ home!

We had a gr8 time playing carrom with the caretakers till abt 1:00 a.m and then finally retired to bed. The excitement to catch a glimpse of the spectacular surroundings did nt leave me to sleep beyond 4:00 a.m :P. But then obviously, it was too too dark n I hd to get back to dreamy state for some more time. Finally, at 6:15 a.m, we were dumbstruck by what we saw around! Paradise on earth – this is where it is!

And now, the place which was our Home Sweet Home for 3 days!

After I pinched myself to confirm that I was not dreaming and ws indeed standing right there, I set out on my morning walk and most unexpectedly got a chance to celebrate Independence day with the locals 🙂 And then some gr8 sight-seeing. Coming up in the next post 😉

  1. Just breathtaking beauty!

Plush Green and misty. It looks so romantic. The best thing about Kerala is its Greenery.

Which story were they doing in Kathakali? Each paint and attire signifies a character but I don’t know much about it.

    And that house..Bliss! heaven!

      1. So what story is it? I have no clue yaar. 😀

Was it ‘killing of Narakasur’? Mostly I have seen ‘Nala-Damayanti’ or ‘stories from Mahabharat’.

          1. Meira, My mom’s grandfather loved the dance form so Katahakali dancers were invited in their ‘tharavadu’ (home) and then performance in the temple.

I have no clue about it at all. It feels boring if we don’t understand the story. Mom told me how some characters are depicted. Green is always good.

            1. Oh i c! I dint know it ws that way 😛

Infact, I ws guessing that he ws the villain til he killed the other person 😉

Hw nice it wud hv been na to hv a performance @ home!

              1. They take a part of the story (mostly from Mahabharat) and then depict it through Kathakali mudras.

Most times there are just 2-3 characters.

I was very small back then, Swaram and I used to sleep because I couldn’t understand much. 😀

Once again thanks for sharing those pictures. It is pure bliss!

                1. Oh the characters r always only 2-3 is it? See, I get so much info from u 🙂 Thanks 🙂

I can understand, we wud hardly want to do anything put play or listen to peppy nos then 🙂

                    1. While Kathakali characters are mute and they perform only through mudras and the song is sung in the background, in Yakshagana they speak. 🙂

BTW looking at the pictures you posted, it looks like that lady is sad/mad at the guy. The guy in Green make-up is a noble character and he is trying to pacify the girl.

When he does nt give in, she gets mad @ him!

Red face paints are evil characters and Green face paints are noble ones.

So the woman is evil here who wants to take away the noble guy.

      2. That house after the waterfalls, is how most Kerala houses are build these days because people are bringing traditional elements and yet modern but what caught my attention is the last house.

Everytime I see the picture of last house, I just feel like I reached heaven.

Next time you must aim for 2018 (I am hoping I will be there) bcoz that is the time the Neelakurinji flowers will adorn the whole of Munnar as it blooms once only in 12 years. I had seen the 1994 spectacle as a kid and it’s still etched in my mind.
