This is a very simple and tasty dish [almost a variation of curd rice] which is made on fasting days, esp. on Krishna Janmashtami as Lord Krishna is traditionally believed to love beaten rice.


Beaten rice(Poha) – Thick variety – 1 cup
Curd – 1.5 curd
Salt to taste

For tempering:

Ghee – 1 tsp
Mustard – 1/2 tsp
Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
Green chillies[finely chopped] – 4-5
Curry leaves – 6-8

For garnishing:

Coriander leaves[finely chopped] – 2 tbsp
Coconut[grated] – 1/2 cup [optional]


Soak the beaten rice in water for 20-30 mins or until soft. Now, drain the water and add the curd and salt and mix well. For the tempering, take ghee in a wok and turn on the flame. When the ghee melts, add mustard. When it splutters, add urad dal. As it turns golden, add the chillies and curry leaves and turn off the flame. Add the tempering to the beaten rice, add the garnishing, mix well and serve.
